In the event an evacuation order is issued by Nassau County Emergency Management, NassauTRANSIT provides emergency transport for those who are housebound or confined to a wheelchair, or suffer from a disability that prevents them from driving. Individuals will be picked up at their residence and brought to the Nassau County Council on Aging where Nassau County School District buses will transport them to evacuation centers.

Nassau County residents must meet specific requirements, as well as, register with the Nassau County Emergency Management to be eligible for this program.

Nassau County Emergency Management stresses to all residents:

“When an evacuation order is given, it is best to travel to an area outside of the impact zone. If you have nowhere else to go, emergency public shelters can ensure you have a safe place to “weather the storm”, but a public shelter should be your last resort (i.e. Plan B). They can be crowded and uncomfortable, may have no electricity, and have no privacy.”

Nassau County’s Special Needs programs are designed for those who have special medical and functional needs and have nowhere else to go, or require government transportation assistance to an emergency public shelter when ordered to evacuate.

Annual Registration Form

Participants in either the Special Medical Needs Sheltering or Evacuation Transportation Assistance to Public Emergency Shelters must enroll and update registration information annually (even if there have been no changes) prior to hurricane season, June 1st of each year.
